H.H. 17th Karmapa’s European Tour 2004


Friday 28 May, Malaga Spain
His Holiness 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje, H.H. Shamar Rinpoche and the accompanying party of Rinpoches, lamas and monks arrived at Malaga. This marked the start of Karmapa’s dharma tour in Europe. Lama Ole, Hannah Nydahl and a large number of dharma students from around the world greeted them at Malaga airport.

Saturday 29 May: Karma Guen, Spain
His Holiness 17th Karmapa inaugurated the new Gompa at the Diamond Way Buddhist Center Karma Guen, near Malaga. H.H. Shamar Rinpoche, Jigme Rinpoche, Shangpa Rinpoche and over 2,500 guests and dharma students from around the world attended the event. The inauguration was followed by Lama dances and an official reception and lunch with the mayors of Benalmadena and Velez Malaga. Later that day Gyalwa Karmapa performed the Mahakala Puja with over 2,500 people present.

Sunday 30 May: Karma Guen, Spain
Gyalwa Karmapa gave the Mahakala Empowerment, then blessed and opened the Mahakala room in Karma Guen. Again 2,500 people were present. A meeting with representatives from the Diamond Way Buddhist centers from around the world followed the empowerment. Dharma students from the US, Latin America, Australia and from all over Europe had a chance to introduce their Dharma work and their centers to Karmapa.

Monday 31 May: Karma Guen, Spain
The Mayor of Velez-Malaga and the city government hosted a reception for Gyalwa Karmapa. Karmapa was given the title of honorary citizen of the historic city of Velez-Malaga. After the official ceremony Karmapa met representatives of the local press for short interviews.

Friday 04 June: Karma Guen, Spain
Gyalwa Karmapa gave the Initiation of Amithayus, the Buddha of Limitless Life. 2,500 people were in attendance.

Saturday 05 June: Benalmadena, Spain
Gyalwa Karmapa gave the initiations of Chenrezig, Loving Eyes, at the stupa in Benalmadena. The stupa was built by Lopon Tsechu Rinpoche and inaugurated by H.H. Shamar Rinpoche in October 2003. The event was followed by a lunch reception hosted by the organizers.

Monday 07 June: Munich, Germany
Lama Ole, Hannah Nydahl, the organizers of the tour in Europe and the party of lamas and monks, accompanied Karmapa from Spain to Germany. The Diamond Way Buddhist Center in Munich greeted Gyalwa Karmapa with a welcoming ceremony. Members of the center showed a video presentation of their project for a future Diamond Way Center in Munich. The short, high-tech video was well received by Karmapa and his party.

Tuesday 08 June: Passau, Germany
Gyalwa Karmapa gave the initiation of Manjushri, Wisdom Buddha, to 1,200 people at the main city hall in Passau.

Wednesday 09 June: Travel day, Germany
Gyalwa Karmapa visited the medieval city of Rothenberg ob der Tauber, in South Germany. He then continued to Heidelberg, where he was welcomed by the Diamond Way Buddhist Center in Heidelberg. Seventeen centers of the Middle Rhine region of Germany introduced their dharma work to Karmapa.

Thursday 10 June: Heidelberg/Mannheim, Germany
Gyalwa Karmapa gave the initiation of White Tara to 2,400 people in Mannheim, near Heidelberg, Germany.

Friday 11 June: Hamburg, Germany
Gyalwa Karmapa attended an official ceremony celebrating the “25 Years of the Buddhist Center in Hamburg”. Gyalwa Karmapa, the district mayor of Hamburg, Lama Ole, members of the city senate, the protestant Bishop of Hamburg, and a representative from the German Buddhist Union gave speeches at the ceremony. The event closed with Lama dances performed by monks from Rumtek monastery. The local media extensively reported the celebrations.

Saturday 12 June: Braunschweig, Germany
Gyalwa Karmapa visited the Diamond Way Buddhist Center in Braunschweig, where he gave the Lung for the Mahamudra wishes of the 3rd Karmapa. The Braunschweig center members introduced Karmapa to their huge project of rebuilding and converting a former factory into a Buddhist center. Karmapa gave the project his full support and encouragement.

Sunday 13 June: Hamburg, Germany
Gyalwa Karmapa gave the Marpa initiation to 1,800 people in Hamburg. The initiation was followed by an official dinner at the Diamond Way Buddhist Center in Hamburg with 250 guests.

Monday 14 June: Kiel, Germany
Gyalwa Karmapa visited the Diamond Way Buddhist Center in Kiel. He toured the places where H.H. 16th Karmapa, his predecessor, had given the Black Crown Ceremony in 1977. The 17th Gyalwa Karmapa also gave the lung for the Mahamudra wishes of the 3rd Karmapa. Karmapa was interviewed by “Kieler Nachrichten”, the biggest newspaper in Kiel. Later that day, Karmapa returned to the Buddhist Center in Hamburg and gave blessings to the local children.

Tuesday 15 June: Zurich, Switzerland
Gyalwa Karmapa arrived in Zurich, where a welcome ceremony was given at the Diamond Way Buddhist Center in Zurich. A blessing of the Stupa followed the ceremony. After the blessing, Karmapa and his party traveled to the Amden retreat center, near Zurich.

Wednesday 16 June: Zurich, Switzerland
The Mayor of Amden was present for the blessing of the Stupa at the retreat center. Later, Gyalwa Karmapa gave the Marpa initiation and the Bodhisattva promise to 1,200 people in Albisguetli Hall in Zurich.

Thursday 17 June: Rodby, Denmark
Gyalwa Karmapa and his party, accompanied by Lama Ole and Hannah Nydahl, traveled to Rodby, Denmark. Karmapa was greeted with a welcoming ceremony at the Rodby retreat center.

Friday 18 June: Rodby, Denmark
Gyalwa Karmapa inaugurated the Mahakala room and gave the first part of the Demchok initiation to those who had completed Ngondro, the Foundational Practices. 350 people received the initiation.

Saturday 19 June: Rodby, Denmark
Gyalwa Karmapa gave the second part of the Demchok initiation. Karmapa also gave the initiation of Amithayus, the Buddha of Limitless Life, and the Bodhisattva promise to 800 Dharma students from Denmark and other parts of Europe.

Sunday 20 June: Copenhagen, Denmark
Gyalwa Karmapa and his party of lamas and monks traveled to the Diamond Way Buddhist Center in Copenhagen. Karmapa gave a long television interview with the biggest TV station in Denmark.

Monday 21 June: Prague, Czech Republic
Gyalwa Karmapa, Lama Ole and Hannah Nydahl and party arrived in Prague. It was Karmapa’s first visit to this country. Here the representatives of the 34 Diamond Way Buddhist centers of the Czech Republic greeted him. Lama Ole gave a public lecture to 1,800 people who arrived to take part in the program.

Tuesday 22 June: Prague, Czech Republic
Gyalwa Karmapa visited the new Diamond Way Buddhist center in Prague and had lunch with members of the Czech Sangha while sailing on a boat on the Moldau River. Later, Karmapa gave the Dorje Sempa, Diamond Mind, initiation to over 1,500 people in the largest concert hall in Prague. There were also hundreds of dharma students from several other Eastern European countries in attendance at the initiation.

Wednesday 23 June: Brno, Czech Republic
Karmapa gave the Bodhisattva promise to over 1,500 people. Karmapa, Lama Ole, Hannah Nydahl and a party of 40 traveled to Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic, where Karmapa was welcomed to the Diamond Way Buddhist Center. Later he gave an interview to a Czech Radio station.

The journey continued to Hungary where Karmapa and the accompanying party stayed at the Diamond Way Buddhist Center in Budapest. Here Karmapa gave the Lung of the 3rd Karmapa’s Mahamudra wishes to over 500 Dharma students from Hungary.

Thursday 24 June: Graz, Austria
Gyalwa Karmapa traveled to Graz, Austria with Lama Ole, Hannah Nydahl and accompanying party. Here Karmapa gave the Milarepa initiation to 1,200 dharma students from Austria and other parts of Europe.

June 26 - 27 : KKS center in Vien, Austria
From June 26th to 27th the supreme head of the Karma Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, the 17th Karmapa Trinle Thaye Dorje, visited the Karma Kagyü Sangha (KKS) Buddhist center in Vienna.

Saturday, June 26th, Vienna
Khenpo Chödrag Tenphel Rinpoche, the spiritual director of the studies and meditation program of KKS and the practitioners welcome the 17th Karmapa, Trinle Thaye Dorje with khatags in a traditional tibetan reception ceremony. Later Gyalwa Karmapa gives the lung (reading transmission) for two important texts: the “Kangloma”, a prayer to Manjushri and the text “ The Welfare of Beings that fills Space”, a practice text relating to Avalokiteshvara. After that Gyalwa Karmapa practices the Mahakala ritual with members of the center attending.

Sunday, June 27th : At 8.30 a.m. the children of our sangha have an audience with Gyalwa Karmapa. Subsequently something takes places which is rightfully termed a “centennial event” by Khenpo Chödrag Rinpoche:

According to the Tibetan calendar this day is the birthday of Guru Rinpoche as well as his chief female disciple Yeshe Tsogyal. Furthermore, in the present Tibetan year of the Monkey, from a Tibetan astrological point of view, this day is a so-called “Day of the Monkey”, which is very rare and said to be very auspicious. On such days the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa always used to celebrate a ganachakra. The 17th Gyalwa Karmapa celebrates the Karma Pakshi Ganachakra with members of KKS.

In the afternoon Gyalwa Karmapa gives a public teaching on the „Four Noble Truths, a way to bliss”. Afterwards he bestowes the empowerment as well as the reading transmission on the Green Tara in the tradition of the 1st Karmapa.

Tuesday 29 June: Gulina, Spain
The visit of H. H. Karmapa was preceded and announced by the arrival of Karmapa's Monks from Rumtek Monastery, who performed a ritual of sacred dances on Sunday 23rd May.
On Tuesday 29th June, H.H. Karmapa arrived at the KMD Centre, Gulina, where he was received by his parents, Dechen Wangmo and Mipham Rinpoche, as well as by the Venerable Lama Teunsang and the Venerable Lama Chogdup Dorje (director of the Centre) and by buddhists from Spain and France.
After lunch H.H. blessed the Centre, the surrounding land and the site where the future monastery will be built.
H. H. Karmapa then went to Pamplona (Hotel Iruña Park) where the wife and sons of the founder of the KMD Centre, Jesús Javier Juanotena (Bodhisattva Jesús) made an offering and a request for long life for His Holiness. His Holiness Karmapa then gave the Taking of Refuge and Dorje Sempa Empowerment to the many buddhists who had come from all over Spain and part of France to take part in this important event.
In the evening, H.H. led the Mahakala practice in the privacy of the KMD Centre.
The next day, Wednesday 30th June, after giving valuble orientations and advice to the members of the KMD Centre, H.H. Karmapa returned to Pamplona, where the buddists present had the opportunity to take the Bodhisattva Vow with His Holiness.

June 30 : San Sebastian, Spain
His Holiness, along with the lamas of his entourage, his parents, Mipham Rinpoche and Mayum an Trinlay Tulku -who were also specially invited to the ocassion-, arrived in San Sebastian the 30th of June at 13 h. and stayed at the Hotel Maria Cristina, where all the events of the program  took place.
First, Karmapa visited our budhist Centre in the city to give blessings and  receive katags from the sangha at a place where we have practiced and recieved many teachers for the last 22 years. After, we offered His Holiness a welcome lunch together with his lamas and 80 members of our sangha.
The program started at 17h. with a conference by Tulku Trinlay on the topic of Love and Compassion. The lecture, given in french with translation into spanish, was attended by around 325 persons, including 50 people from the french side of the Côte Basque.
At 19h. His Holiness Gyalwa Karmapa gave the Chenresi Empowerment preceded by explanations and the actual giving of the Refuge. Around 400 people were present at the Empowerment and about 110 of them took refuge. A deep feeling of love touched the hearts of the people gathered at the place completely filled with the warmth of His Holiness blessings.
The first visit of H. H. Gyalwa Karmapa to San Sebastian had a very positive impact on the press and was well covered by the different media in town. Local newspaper and the radio offered very complete reports before and after the visit and also a local television channel gave a special program in which Tulku Trinlay was interviewed.

July 1st : Cerence, France
On the first of July, "Yoga & Famille Association" received His Holiness Karmapa.
Venerable Lama Teunsang came in the day before to get everything organized. His Holiness visited the facilities and blessed the buildings. 120 persons offered a kata and received a blessing. 6 persons took the opportunity to take refuge with His Holiness.
After the "prise de refuge", His Holiness and all lamas made Mahakala puja. We all shared a very nice dinner - thanks again to everyone who helped organized it.
After the diner a teaching about compassion was given by His Holiness and translated by Trinlay Rimpoche. His Holiness gave a name to the association : Karma Samten Ling. His Holiness and the lamas all left early the following day. We have been very fortunate to welcome His Hollyness to the association and we would like to sincerely thank His Holiness, Lama Teunsang, all the lamas and monks who were present.

Tuesday 6 July : Kundröl ling, France
Gyalwa Karmapa arrived about 3:00 PM for a very short visit. People who were there at that time (about a hundred) could receive his blessing so expected in a very peaceful and joyful atmosphere.
No public event was planned because His Holiness's coming was for giving his blessing into the long retreat centers and discuss about the next 3 years retreat.
At 6:00 PM, we had the great pleasure and honor to make Mahakala with Him.
The following day, in the late morning, Gyalwa Karmapa left for Geneva.

7th July : Kagyü Shenpen Künkyab, Anières near Geneva, Switzerland
His Holiness the 17th Karmapa performed a Mahakala Puja in the presence of about a hundred guests and Dharma practitioners.
Thursday 8th July: Kagyü Shenpen Künkyab, downtown Geneva. In the morning, the Gyalwa Karmapa gave refuge vows and Bodhisatthva vows. Then, Ven. Lama Mönlam and Dharma students offered a Mandala and the support of body, speech and mind as well as long life prayers to the Karmapa. H.H. blessed all who were present. In the afternoon, H.H. gave the initiation of Vajrapani-Hayaghriva-Garuda. In total, nearly 800 people from all over Europe, as well as from North and South America and other countries, attended the events on that day.
Auspicious signs manifested themselves these days: over the centre at Anières, a rainbow appeared and while the Gyalwa Karmapa went shopping in the city of Geneva, a complete and double rainbow adorned the sky above it.

Friday 9th of July : Karma Migyur Ling, France
In the morning, Lama Teunsang and all his followers received His Holiness
the 17th Karmapa with a welcome ceremony.
In the after noon, His Holiness the 17th Karmapa transmitted the empowerment of Karma Pakshi, the second Karmapa to an audience of 500 people from France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Swiss and other country. The two Nedön Tulku, Lama Teunsang of Montchardon (Karma Migyur Ling) and 14 monks of Rumtek Monastery attended this ceremony.

Saturday 10th of July : Karma Migyur Ling, France
In the morning, Nedön Tulku, the Vajracary of Rumtek Monastery, gave his first public teaching in the West.
In the after noon, His Holiness the 17th Karmapa transmitted the empowerment of the three aspects of Haryagriva, Vajrapani and Garuda. There were around 650 people gathered under the tent.
In the evening, His Holiness the 17th Karmapa accompanied by all his monks joined a big Mahakala puja in the Temple of 1000 Buddha of Karma Migyur Ling and participant received the traditional offering of rice and tea.

Sunday 11th of July : Karma Migyur Ling, France
In the morning, Nedön Tulku continues with his teaching on the basic principles of Buddhism. Many people attended this teaching and really appreciate his brilliant way of explaining the Dharma.
In the afternoon, His Holiness the 17th Karmapa transmitted the Bodhisattva Vows to the audience of 650 people gathered under the tent for this occasion.
His Holiness the 17th Karmapa concluded his visit in Montchardon Karma Migyur Ling by giving some precious advice for the Dharma practice and expressing his great satisfaction for the fulfillment of all the Dharma activities that has been taken on under the guidance of Lama Teunsang during all these years. His Holiness also expressed his best wishes for the construction of the new retreat center.

In the morning, Lama Teunsang and all his followers wished His Holiness the 17th Karmapa a good trip to Dhagpo Kagyu Ling.

July 16th : Perpignan France
In preparation for the visit of Gyalwa Karmapa, the morning in the KTT was spent accumulating "Karmapa Khyenno"mantras. His Holiness arrived at midday and had lunch with several members of the KTT, a few lamas and drouplas, and three journalists of "France 3 Sud" and the newspapers. After having granted them a short interview, Gyalwa Karmapa went to the local temple of the KTT, where he was received with an official ceremony. He gave blessing to the members of the center, and the program continued with an interreligious meeting: Some 350 people listened to the dialog between Maître Maurice Halimi, representing Judaism, Father Jean-Baptiste Blondeau from the Catholic church, Doctor Ahmad Akkari of the Muslim community, Father Jean-Marie Bricault from the Greek Orthodox and Mrs Raymonde Debosc from the Reformist church as well as several local political representativs: vice mayer Mrs Pages, M Calviac representing the prefect and M Lecler of the county council.Gyalwa Karmapa gave a concluding teaching on loving kindness and compassion.
In the late afternoon, all together enjoyed a garden party in the courtyard of the KTT temple.
After the Mahakala puja in the evening, the blessed day was crowned by an initiation of Karma Pakshi, which about 450 people attended.

July 17 : Cannes, France
In the afternoon, he performed the Hayagriva empowerment and in the evening he presided over the show of tibetan holly dances. This event took place at the Théâtre Noga Croisette, Hôtel Noga Hilton, 50 Boulevard de la Croisette, CANNES. Over 600 persons attended these two events.
During the diner break, he met several personalities like the mayor of the City of Cannes, French Parliament Deputy and different managers of companies.

July 18 - 19 Institut Karmapa, France
We received His Holiness on 18th of July . there was nearly 350 people who were waiting for HH arrival in the morning at 11am. At once, a teaching was given by Nendo Rinpoche, giving basis of Bouddha Dharma in a very joyful atmosphere. In the afternoon, HH gave the intiation of Mandjoushri Naseng. Lama Jigmé Rinpoché, Nendo Tulkou and HH's close entourage, Nendo Rinpoche and the Lama's dancers Sangha and 350 people attended the empowerment. On Monday the 19th, HH and all the Sangha performed a ritual to bless the place in the temple of Valderoure.

Tuesday 20 July: Brescia, Italy
First visit of 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje in Italy
Organised by the Kagyu buddhist centre "Karma Tegsum Ciò Ling"

Gyalwa Karmapa arrived in the afternoon to Brescia, Italy from Nice accompanied by his entourage and Lama Könciog Luigi, president and resident lama of Karma Tegsum Ciò Ling Brescia.
Tuesday evening public event in the Auditorium San Barnaba, Brescia. "Full house" for the inauguration of the first official meeting of the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa to an audience of 400 guests. Opening ceremony by the Lord Mayor of Brescia, Prof. Paolo Corsini and welcome greeting by the representative of the Bishop of Brescia, Monsignor Lucio Cuneo vicar Episcopal for inter-religious relations.
The evening proceeded with H.H. Karmapa taking his throne and presenting the discussion on bodhicitta entitled "The importance today of love and compassion as a means to realise peace". H.H. Karmapa concluded this first evening by giving the bodhisattva vows and a blessing to the audience.
Wednesday 21st July Chokhor Duchen (First teaching of Buddha Sakyamuni). In the morning H.H. Karmapa visited for and blessed the Diamond-way centre of Brescia. In the afternoon H.H. Karmapa arrived to the main centre "Karma Tegsum Ciò Ling" in Brescia where a press conference took place followed by a meeting of HH. Karmapa with children and parents members of the centre. After a short break H.H. Karmapa proceeded with the Blessing of the centre and the placing the NAMKHYEN GYALDAR flag (Karmapa flag) on the balcony of the centre followed meeting with the members of the centre in the Lhakang (temple) and ending with an offering to H.H. Karmapa, the Rinpoche's and the Lama's.
Wednesday evening, Second event at the Auditorium San Barnaba. "Full house" with 400 guests for the second evening during which H.H. Karmapa continued the discussion on bodhicitta of previous evening. Following this discussion the Refuge ceremony took place with over 90 people taking refuge with H.H. Karmapa. After the Refuge ceremony, H.H. Karmapa granted the Avoloketeshvara (Chenresi) empowerment and the evening concluded with thanksgiving by offering the enlightened body, speech and mind to H.H. Karmapa.

Thursday 22 July : Bordo
Early in the morning H.H. Karmapa and the entourage departed Brescia by car via Domodossola for the Centre of Bordo in the Italian alps. From Domodossola H.H. Karmapa was accompanied by helicopter with Trinley Tulku and Lama Taschi Andreas to Pianeza a future retreat place of Bordo. The helicopter took H.H. then to Riviera from where he took the 20 minute walk to Bordo. In early afternoon a teaching were given by Ven. Lama Jigme Rinpoche and Gyalwa Karmapa blessed the village. Mid afternoon Mahakala Puja was preformed led by Jigme Rinpoche and Lama's. In the evening Gyalwa Karmapa met with local dignitaries and authorities. An offering of the Mandala and enlightened body, speech and mind was performed before H.H. granted the Green Tara empowerment.
In the morning of Friday July 23rd H.H. Karmapa departed from Bordo and Italy for Warsaw in Poland.

Friday 23 July: Warsaw, Poland
Gyalwa Karmapa arrived in Warsaw, Poland where he visited the Diamond Way Buddhist “Stupahouse”. The Stupahouse is currently under construction, being transformed into a beautiful center in the heart of the city. Karmapa and other guests were shown a video presentation that chronicled the four years of construction of the “Stupahouse” center.

Sunday 25 July: Kuchary, Poland
Gyalwa Karmapa traveled to the retreat center in Kuchary near Warsaw. Upon arrival Karmapa was interviewed by a local TV station and by “Przekroj”, the largest weekly magazine in Poland. Later, Karmapa gave the first part of the Demchok Initiation to those who had finished Ngöndro, the Foundational Practices. 300 Dharma practitioners received the initiation.

Monday 26 July: Kuchary, Poland
Gyalwa Karmapa gave the second part of the Demchok Initiation to those who had completed Ngöndro. Karmapa also gave the Initiation of Amitabha, the Buddha of Limitless Light, and the Bodhisattva promise to 3,000 Polish and Eastern European Dharma students.

Tuesday 27 July [Birthday of Guru Rinpoche]: Kuchary, Poland
Gyalwa Karmapa gave the Karma Pakshi initiation to 3,000 people. A meeting with representatives of the Diamond Way Buddhist centers from Eastern Europe followed. Several hundred dharma students from all corners of Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania and other Eastern European countries enthusiastically informed Karmapa about the Dharma activity in their respective countries. Karmapa thanked all present for their hard work and expressed a wish to visit their countries in the near future.

Gyalwa Karmapa and his party traveled to Frankfurt, Germany. Karmapa arrived at the summer camp near Kassel, Immenhausen where nearly 2,000 Dharma students waited to receive him.

Gyalwa Karmapa gave the Initiation of Amitabha, the Buddha of Limitless Light, and a Bodhisattva promise to 2,200 Dharma practitioners from Germany and around the world.

Friday 30 July: Kassel Immenhausen, Germany
Gyalwa Karmapa gave the Karma Pakshi initiation to over 2,700 people. He later met the Board of Directors of the Diamond Way Foundation where he was acquainted with the Foundation’s work and future projects. Karmapa expressed his full support for the Foundation’s activity.

Saturday 31 July: Kassel Immenhausen, Germany
Gyalwa Karmapa gave the Chenrezig, Loving Eyes, Initiation and the Bodhisattva Promise to over 3,000 dharma students. Later, Gyalwa Karmapa blessed and initiated the 72-hour meditation on Chenrezig, Loving Eyes, inspiring his students to recite Om Mani Peme Hung mantra. H.H. 17th Karmapa concluded his program in Kassel by thanking Lama Ole and the thousands of students he had met on his tour for their hard work for the Dharma. He expressed his full support for the development and vision of the Diamond Way centers and his strong wish to return to Europe the following year.
